Sideslip testing is a routine but consequential step in vehicle inspection, measuring how far a wheel drifts laterally as it rolls and flagging suspension or alignment faults before they turn into uneven tire wear or handling problems. Hofmann's TRACTEST series is built to bring that measurement into regular workshop workflows, with two models covering passenger cars and heavy commercial vehicles.
In a typical test, the vehicle is driven slowly across a set of moving plates that record lateral displacement as each wheel passes over them. The resulting figure shows whether the alignment angles, particularly camber and toe, are working together as the manufacturer intended.
Because the reading is taken while the vehicle is rolling, it reflects road behavior more closely than static geometry measurements alone. Sideslip that exceeds the specified tolerance generally points to worn suspension parts, bent steering components or misalignment, giving technicians a documented basis for recommending further inspection or adjustment.
Hofmann, a manufacturer of wheel service and workshop equipment, supplies the TRACTEST series to repair shops, tire dealers and body repair centers. The equipment uses an automated test sequence intended to shorten vehicle turnaround time while producing repeatable data.
Two models are listed, differentiated primarily by the class of vehicle they are designed to handle.
| Model | Vehicle application |
|---|---|
| TRACTEST 2500 E | Passenger cars (sedans) |
| TRACTEST 4000 E | Commercial vehicles (trucks) |
Model selection generally follows the workshop's core business. The TRACTEST 2500 E is configured for passenger cars and covers the routine checks required in most sedan and light-vehicle service bays.
The TRACTEST 4000 E is engineered for trucks and other large commercial vehicles, with greater load capacity and a plate design suited to heavier axle weights. For mixed-fleet operations, the deciding factor is the heaviest vehicle the bay is expected to test on a regular basis.
Test plates should be kept clear of debris, oil and grit, since contamination can reduce sensor sensitivity and distort results. Routine cleaning is normally part of daily workshop practice.
Manufacturer guidance also calls for periodic calibration so that readings remain within industry tolerances. Recording those calibration intervals helps maintain consistency across repeat visits and supports the credibility of the inspection report.
